Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Alexander "Sandy" Pope is pursuing a doctorate in the teaching of social studies at Teachers College, Columbia University. He is studying the application of experiential learning in social studies to provide civics education that encourages students to engage their communities directly to solve social problems. In 2004 Sandy completed a BA in History/Philosophy at The Colorado College. In 2008 he earned an MA in History, and the following year an MA in Secondary Education from Texas State University – San Marcos. Sandy is entering the second year of his Arthur Zankel Urban Fellowship, which allows him to work with lower-performing elementary students in a one-on-one interdisciplinary setting during the regular school day. As a 2009-2010 AmeriCorps Fellow, Sandy worked within the Harlem community to address the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic through the Harlem AIDS Blanket, an educational art therapy program. Since November 2009 he has worked with Generation Citizen to bring their civic engagement program to New York City. Sandy will be working with Generation Citizen at the High School for Media and Communication in Washington Heights. In August of 2010, he began working with Learning through an Expanded Arts Program to provide professional development opportunities for New York City social studies teachers.
